Fell 2457

Ella was furious. Not only had Gertrude overstepped her bounds, but also Sea Witch seemed to be purposely doing things to thwart the person who owned her. How could her own boat allow her to fall off like that? It was a wonder she hadn’t been caught in some time rift. As it was, she didn’t at all enjoy finding herself in Otherworld. It was a place of bad memories having to do with her childhood and filled with people who she hated and who hated her. Luckily it hadn’t taken long for Sea Witch to heed her command. She smiled, thinking about the expression on Gertrude’s face when she ordered her off.

But why had she spared the woman’s life? All Gertrude was to her was a nuisance, someone who could muck up her plans. The meddling woman had already interfered by taking Dan back to the past—a definite reason to have struck her dead on the spot. But then again, having Gertrude in the future could distract Loki and keep him off her back. She wondered if Gertrude had any idea what time-travel could do to her mortal body. Ella was somewhat immune, but if Gertrude didn’t pay closer attention, she would soon discover the consequences. Ella smiled, imagining the ravages to Gertrude’s skin, the memory loss and premature aging. How many times had the woman gone back and forth? It wouldn’t be long.

Once the boat had come to a stop on the shores of Fell, Ella was surprised by how things had changed. More shake-ups had occurred in her absence and she could no longer see the spires of the castle she’d so painstakingly built for Dan. In the distance, columns of black smoke lifted into the still air. There was a shift in the feel of the place, as though someone or something had replaced her. That’s impossible, she thought shaking her head. This world belonged to her.

“Ella. Where in hell have you been?”

Ella turned to see Brandubh standing on the beach in front of her with a frown on his face.

“Gertrude took the boat and I ended up…oh never mind. What’s happened here?”

“You look like you’ve been through a whirlwind,” Brandubh observed, his gaze going from her tangled hair to her shredded clothing. “I hope you have a good reason for your absence, since Loki took the opportunity to destroy everything you accomplished. A lot of your workers were killed in the process; I think Loki was hoping to kill you, but since you weren’t here, he unleashed his wrath on everyone else in sight. Since then, I’ve reclaimed Fehin, kidnapped him from Kafir and the others. Where did you say Gertrude is?”

Ella looked around impatiently. “She’s in Otherworld at the moment with no way to return here unless that blasted boat takes off again without my permission. I thought the gods couldn’t harm humans.”

“Odin lifted that ban. It’s all-out war from now on. Come on, I’ll show you the damage.”

Ella followed the dark-haired sorcerer along the path that led toward her carefully constructed town, heaviness settling into her chest.
